Branding is key when launching a business. When beginning a new venture, you want to make sure that you have the proper stones in place, such as branding.

You should always be conscious of how a brand feels and looks. There’s this common misconception that branding is only about logos and aesthetics. However, the most successful brands convey something influential and intrinsic about that business and its values.

Let’s set up your business for success!

1) Define Your Brand

This step is the most important when building a business. When you have a strong foundation with all the right components, it will leave an impression on your potential customers and target audience.

Here are five essentials to ask when defining your brand:

  1. What Are The Beliefs and Values Of Your Brand?

  2. Why Should People Care About Your Company?

  3. What Is Your Brand Story?

  4. What Is Your Target Audience?

  5. What Problems Do We Help Our Customers Solve?

  6. Which Brands Did You Look Up to When First Building Your Business?

2) Craft A Tagline

When crafting a tagline for your business, you want to focus on it, perfectly defining your brand. Although not all brands need a slogan, taglines can go places where your logo can’t go. When writing your tagline, see that it meets these specific criteria, such as keeping it short, memorable, original, and conveys a brand’s point of difference.

Below are some examples of catchy taglines:

Example #1: “So Good, Cats Ask for It by Name” - Meow Mix

Example #2: "Belong Anywhere." - Airbnb

Example #3: “Just Do It.” - Nike

Example #4:  “Obey Your Thirst” - Spirit

3) Keep The Number Of Fonts Low (Two or Three)

How do you choose the right fonts for your brand? The typefaces you choose can significantly impact your brand’s representation and what it communicates to your audience.

One tip that I have for you is not overdoing it when exploring and picking out the fonts. You can easily make a brand look visually confusing and too busy when you use too many fonts. This is all unnecessary, and it can be avoided. Ideally, you should stick to two or three fonts in total for your business. Remember that the fonts will be utilized across your brand’s logo and website.

A great place to discover an array of fonts is Design Bundles. This marketplace provides individuals, especially small businesses & creators, with affordable digital products such as graphics, templates, mock-ups, patterns, illustrations, fonts, and craft files. The best part is that it’s a free fonts website and offers various beautiful typefaces for any brand.

4) Make A Mood Board

Making a mood board should be labeled task #1. You don’t want to build your brand without creating a mood board!

A mood board resembles a collage that holds texts, images, colors, fonts, and other objects. It can serve as a guide that communicates your brand’s identity. A mood board can also be utilized when forming a website. It’s great to have everything you need all in one place and doesn’t have to be hard!

When you're designing a mood board, there are some suggestions that I recommend that you should keep in mind:

  1.  You can quickly begin by creating a secret board on Pinterest with images that would both resonate with your audience and reflect your brand.

  2. Find a balance because too much imagery can get confusing. You want enough information & inspiration from your mood board that it points you in a direction.

  3. Be consistent. Don’t include texts or images just because you like them. Ask yourself, does this communicate with my brand? Stay focused on your message!

  4. When selecting your branding colors, consider color theory. Which colors match the keywords you associate with your brand? For example, If you’re more about energy and positivity, try different shades of yellow.

Tip: Make sure you save the specific colors for future use—Canva is an excellent tool for saving your brand colors.
