Traditional marriage proposals have been the norm for a long time. But not everyone wants to do things the traditional way. If you're not feeling the whole "down on one knee" thing or want to make your proposal extra special, there are plenty of other ways to pop the question. Here are seven creative ways to propose to someone if you're not the traditional type!

01) Don't wait for the man to propose

It's traditionally the duty of the man to propose. However, many women have been breaking this tradition by popping the question first. This gives women the power to decide when to take the relationship to the next stage instead of waiting for when (or if) the man eventually proposes. It also gives women an equal opportunity to express their love in a way that is usually only available to men.

Proposing as a woman can have its risks, of course. If a man was planning a proposal, they might feel you've stolen their thunder, but there's no reason why they can't still propose back. This allows you to still experience being proposed to while helping you initiate the marriage proposal process so that you're not kept waiting.

02) Propose without a ring

You don't have to propose with a ring. While a ring is the traditional token of marriage, no law says you need a ring to be engaged. This could be something to consider for couples that may not have the money for a ring or may not be fussed about jewelry.

Of course, you could always use a different token, such as another item of jewelry or some other keepsake gift that can have the same symbolism. By choosing your own token, you may even be able to find something more valuable or meaningful to your partner (such as an engraved designer watch for someone that loves watches). Alternatively, you could propose without a ring and then buy a ring together afterward. This is becoming a much more popular way of proposing as it allows the partner to choose the style of ring they want.

03) Explore unique ring styles

If you choose to propose with a ring, why not consider an alternative style of ring? The most traditional type of engagement ring is a solitaire diamond ring made of gold or silver, but there are many other settings, stones, and metals that you can explore.

Unusual settings include tension rings and rings with multiple stones. These could contain unique diamonds such as colored diamonds or even uncut diamonds - or you could explore different gemstones altogether. When it comes to metals, there are meanwhile all kinds of options ranging from platinum to tungsten carbide. Shop around different jewelry stores to explore different designs. You could even consider a custom ring to create something truly unique.

04) Present the ring in a unique way

You also don't have to present the ring in a box while kneeling on one knee. There are many fun and creative alternative methods of presenting the ring that you can look into online. Common examples include placing the ring in a champagne glass or with a book.

There are also many alternative methods when it comes to popping the actual question. There are budget options, such as spelling it out with alphabet spaghetti, or more expensive options, such as paying a plane to fly a banner across the sky. Consider getting creative to make the moment all the more unique.

05) Get a tattoo

Tattoos are permanent, so if you're going to get one, make sure it's something you want to live with for the rest of your life. If you do decide to take the plunge, here are some ways to make your proposal unique:

  • Get a tattoo that says "Will You Marry Me?" with an arrow pointing down at your ring finger.

  • Get a tattoo that says "I Love You" on one side and "Forever & Always" on the other.

  • Get a tattoo that has a special meaning for both of you (like the date when you met).

06) Go skydiving together

Skydiving is a thrilling experience for anyone who has done it once, let alone twice! A proposal should be memorable — so why not make it memorable by doing something you've never done before? Propose to your significant other mid-air and watch their heart soar with joy as they say yes.

07) Take them on an adventure date

Instead of just taking your partner out to dinner or spending some time at home watching Netflix together, plan an adventure date where they don't know what's going on or where they're going until they arrive there! This could be anything from going rock climbing or hiking to taking them on an overnight trip somewhere new! The point is that no matter what activity it is, it will be something that both of you can enjoy together.
