Do you and your family suffer from poor dental health? If so, you're not alone. Dental care can be a dirty word at times. It makes you worry about bill counts and the cost. However, dental health is vital to your everyday life and shouldn't be neglected.

Our teeth are our most precious assets. We should treat them with care to get the most out of them. When it comes down to it, once your adult teeth come through, you need to do your most to make them last a lifetime. This takes time, effort, and - occasionally - financial investment. But it is possible. So today, I'm sharing a few tips to help you get into a good dental care routine!

Brushing and Flossing

It’s no secret that you should brush your teeth twice daily. You should use a good quality toothbrush, whether that’s manual or electric, and a dentist recommended toothpaste with fluoride. You then need to make sure that you actually clean your teeth for two minutes, morning and night. All too many people will give their teeth a quick scrub and get on with their day or wind down for bed. Instead, set a timer to get yourself into the habit of actually cleaning for a full two minutes. Then you should make sure to floss correctly. Use dental tape or dental floss for your front teeth and the right size interdental cleaners for your molars.

Dental Check-Ups

You should visit your dentist and hygienist roughly every six months as an adult. This gives them an opportunity to look around your mouth and ensure that everything is as it should be. Routine checkups can spot the warning signs or early stages of dental problems ranging from cavities to impacted wisdom teeth, allowing you to take action sooner rather than later and preventing issues such as dental pain or even more significant dental treatments, such as tooth removal or root canals.

Of course, if you have pain, you can visit more frequently or book an emergency appointment. Don’t solely rely on pain relievers like over the counter painkillers or supplements from Club13, a good checkup is always the foundation. Your hygienist will survey your mouth’s hygiene, removing plaque and tartar build-up and reaching areas you may not be able to get yourself routinely.

Straightening

A lot of people would like straighter teeth. Straight teeth aren't necessary at the end of the day, and you can live a completely healthy and happy life with crooked or less than straight teeth. But if you want straighter teeth, consider braces or aligners. Most adults opt for clear aligners, as these are more discreet and don’t have such a significant impact on appearance. Of course, this is a process that takes time, but you can discuss timescales with your dentist when you inquire about which option will best meet your needs.

Whitening

Teeth whitening is another cosmetic dentistry treatment that more people are growing interested in. Incorrect application can result in patchy results or increased tooth sensitivity. Of course, it’s recommended that you visit a professional when considering teeth whitening, as at-home kits can have less effective and potentially damaging results.
