What does dating yourself mean? They often say that in order to be able to love somebody else, you need first to love yourself. And, while feelings of self-worth and appreciation can be hard to build, they are actually an essential part of your romantic journey.

This is because loving yourself means that you do not have to look for validation elsewhere, helping you avoid toxic or codependent relationships that will drain your health and happiness. Furthermore, it also enables you to set necessary standards when it comes to dating and interpersonal relationships - as you now know your worth in a relationship and will not settle for anything less than you deserve.

There are many reasons why you should consider ‘dating’ yourself before you get into the dating game - whether you have been single for a little while or have recently come out of a relationship. In addition to setting the standard for future relationships, dating yourself can also:

  • Boost positive thinking, teaching you that there is nothing wrong with being single or spending a little time alone.

  • Give you the chance to learn more about yourself, your passions, and your interests by giving you the gift of time.

  • Allow you to invest 100% of your time and energy into yourself instead of focusing on others.

  • Help you develop a positive body image and confidence by learning to embrace your inner beauty.

  • Help you to heal from any emotional stress or pain you may have experienced in the past.

Dating yourself doesn’t mean that you need to change your Facebook relationship status. It simply means that you focus on spending time with yourself and show yourself the same love and appreciation that you would show a romantic partner. For example, you could:

  •  Buy yourself beautiful Flowers without waiting for a specific reason (i.e., a celebration/special occasion). Instead, buy them because you like them! You can now even order them online and have them delivered to your home.

  • Take yourself out for a meal, tackling the idea that it is weird or strange to eat alone. One of the benefits of solo dining is that you won’t have to share any food or compromise on your choice of restaurant.

  • Turning down plans or invites when you do not feel like going instead of spending time alone.

  • Paying yourself compliments throughout the day. Despite common misconception, this is not a sign of arrogance - it is just a way to grow organically in confidence and challenge any feelings of negativity. If you find this hard, begin by standing in front of the mirror each morning and try to say three positive things about yourself to start your day. They don’t necessarily have to pertain to physical appearance. For example, you can compliment yourself for your tenacity, your kindness, or your unique skills.

Consider taking a solo trip (once it is safe to travel) to learn more about yourself and the world around you. Traveling alone is often described as groundbreaking as it presents you with a series of challenges that you wouldn’t face elsewhere. Self-love is not selfish!
